Nothing like a long holiday weekend to fire up the fall spirit. Your choices this wknd. include....
...plenty of football games locally:
Homecoming at the U of R as Coach Scott Greene's Yellowjackets host Alfred St. Sat. at 1p at Fauver Stadium
High school action Fri. night as Schroeder and Thomas batle for the title of king of Webster, Honeyoe Falls-Lima travels to Eastridge, Brockport heads east to Victor, Marshall west to Gates-Chili, Penfield west to Spencerport and Canandaigua north to Brighton at 7p. Sat. the rivalry kicks into high gear with Aquinas @ McQuaid at 2p, Pittsford-Sutherland takes on Fairport, Batavia heads into Greece to play Arcadia while Athena and Olympia are down the road fighting for the supremacy of Greece, Hilton rolls into Rush-Henrietta and out in the Finger Lakes Clyde-Savannah travels up route 21 to Red Jacket.
and good news for Bills fans, Sunday's game will be broadcast on TV 8 because Ralph Wilson snatched up the remaining tickets as Buffalo hosts the Bengals.
...skating for Brick City:
RIT celebrates it's own Homecoming wknd. with Damon John (from ABC's "Shark Tank") speaking at the Saunders School Fri. at 3p, and the Tigers hockey team hosting national college powerhouse Michigan at the Blue Cross Arena for a sold out game Sat.
...biking, running and Walking:
The 3rd Annual Breast Cancer Bike and Run starts up Sun. at 8am at Mendon Ponds Park. There will be 10, 25 and 50 mile bike routes and a 5K run.
and "Walking Dead" returns to AMC for it's season 4 premiere Sun. night at 9p. Rick Grimes returns with his team who triumphantly fought off the Governor's forces at the prison in last season's finale. Darryl and Carol will surely start up new trouble with the zombies.
...jammin' in Buffalo.
Pearl Jam to be precise, Sat. night at First Niagara Center, formerly known as HSBC Arena, formerly known as Marine Midland Arena, formerly...well, you get the point. Banks come and go but rock never dies!
...farming in Canandaigua, and sailing at the box office for Columbus.
Stock up on locally grown fruit, vegetables and other fresh products from the field at the Canandaigua Farmer's Market downtown on Mill St. Sat. from 8:30a-12:30p. In honor of the city's 100th birthday celebration, there will be free birthday cake, raffles and live music. And while you're there, stop across the street and have a drink to celebrate with the Catalfamo family at Rocky's, a spot where my dad spent plenty of time campaigning for the italian vote back in the glory days.
Tom Hanks takes to the sea in "Captain Phillips", based on the true story of Somali pirates who took on a cargo ship and lost to the Navy SEALS. The timing for release of this sure-fire hit is perfect on the wknd. we celebrate Christopher Columbus, who somehow found his way to America aboard a rickety old ship. Ahoy, and have a great wknd. mate!
