UPDATE: State of Emergency in Yates County in Wake of Storm

Penn Yan, NY -- A State of Emergency is in effect in Yates County after flash flooding devastated many areas there, including the village of Penn Yan.

Sheriff Ron Spike says the Qwl House Community Center, which was being revamped, was destroyed. And the parking lot behind it collapsed, sending several cars down into Jacobs Creek. He says there were no reports of injuries. He says calls to 911 were mostly for downed wires and roads flooded away.

The Red Cross opened a shelter at the high school in Penn Yan to help out those who flooded out of their homes.

Sen. Chuck Schumer said Wednesday he'd be calling the head of the Federal Emergency Management Agency to get federal resources to Yates County as quickly as possible.

In Ontario County, high winds damaged rooftops and brought down trees -- including a tree at Route 21 and Main Street in Shortsville. A woman was injured in a two-vehicle crash at that intersection before dawn when the traffic light was out.

Sheriff Phil Povero says Shortsville, Manchester and Clifton Springs were the hardest hit areas in the county.

There were also reports of standing water on roads near Naples.
