(13WHAM) Cape Canaveral, Florida -- A University of Rochester alum who dreamt of going to space may just get the chance.

Josh Cassada is one of eight people picked this week to be a NASA trainee. Six thousand people applied.

The trainees could become the first American astronauts to launch from the United States since the ending of the space shuttle program.

Cassada grew up in Minnesota. He received two advanced degrees from the University of Rochester. Cassada will start training in August.
