Rochester, N.Y. (AP) - A trial is set to begin for two people charged in the death of a high school teacher who was hit by their vehicles while she rode her bicycle along a suburban Rochester road last summer.
Mark Scerbo of Penfield and Meagan Merkel of Ontario in Wayne County are scheduled to stand trial starting Monday in Monroe County Court in Rochester.
The charges against the 23-year-old Scerbo and 24-year-old Merkel include manslaughter and driving while intoxicated.
Police say 40-year-old Heather Boyum of Perinton was riding her bike along a road in Penfield last July 29 when she was hit by Scerbo's motorcycle. The impact sent her into the road, where she was hit by Merkel's car.
Boyum was a teacher at Fairport High School.
