Batavia, N.Y. – Three people were taken to the hospital after a pickup truck struck a tractor trailer Tuesday afternoon.

It happened at about 1:45 on Route 63 (Lewiston Road).

The Genesee County Sheriff’s Office says the driver of the pickup attempted to pass several other cars and a tractor trailer, when the tractor trailer made a left-hand turn in the pickup’s path.

The pickup was unable to stop and hit the back of the trailer.

The pickup driver was trapped and had to be freed by the Batavia Fire Department.

There were a total of four people in the pickup; two were taken by ambulance and one was taken by Mercy Flight to the Erie County Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.  The fourth person did not require medical attention.

The sheriff’s office says the crash happened in a legal passing zone.

No charges have been filed, but that could change as the investigation continues.
