Rochester, N.Y. - The University of Rochester Medical Center says that a USB drive with patient information is missing. Officials believe the flash drive is lost at an outpatient facility and likely destroyed in the laundry.

The flash drive has the information of more than 500 former orthopaedic patients, including their names, birth dates, medical record numbers and diagnosis.

The patients' addresses, social security numbers and information were not compromised. URMC officials say that the affected patients will receive a letter with phone numbers if they want more information.

URMC says that they are now taking steps to re-educating its faculty and staff about security policies to protect patient information. URMC says the encourage physicians and staff to access sensitive patient information using its secure network rather than transfer information on portable devices.
